The Ricky Nelson Story

In ‘50s America, he grew up in front of millions as TV’s most famous child star. Yet acting and singing sensation Ricky Nelson was destined to battle with love, loss and redemption before falling from grace in one of Hollywood’s most tragic tales.

”It’s just that none of those girls really knew me. I’d go out there on stage and they’d just scream.”

In ‘50s America, Ricky Nelson grew up as TV’s most famous young star. His family dramatised their ‘real-life’ picture-perfect world for the enjoyment of millions in the sensationally successful and long-running TV show, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.
But acting and singing sensation Ricky was destined to confront love, loss and redemption before suffering a premature end in one of Hollywood’s most compelling and tragic tales.

Battles with fame, drink, drugs and his domineering father – there seemed to be no end to the pressures in Ricky Nelson’s life as he moved from teen screen idol to a singing superstar whose popularity was second only to Elvis Presley’s and whose music would influence contemporary pop-culture icons such as Bob Dylan.

THE RICKY NELSON STORY depicts how Ricky fought for a ‘normal’ life away from the demands of stardom and the legions of screaming female fans.
It also shows his destructive infatuation with a young junkie and how his singing career went into decline as his changing musical tastes offended those who remembered him as a clean-cut young star.

This riveting story of one of music and TV’s greatest pioneers features a fine performance from GREG CALPAKIS (Cold Squad) as Ricky Nelson with SARA BOTSFORD (E.N.G.) and JAMEY SHERIDAN (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) as his parents. The script is written by ARLENE SARNER (Peggy Sue Got Married) and the director is STURLA GUNNARSSON (Oscar®-nominated for the documentary After the Axe).

Ricky Nelson – a biography
Eric Hilliard ‘Ricky’ Nelson was born in 1940 in Teaneck, New Jersey. He was the son of bandleader Ozzie Nelson and his wife, Harriet, the band’s singer. Together with his parents and brother, David, Ricky starred in the radio and TV series The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, in which the Nelsons effectively played themselves.

The show turned Ricky into a teen idol and ran from 1944-66 (to begin with, the sons were played on the radio by professional actors). By 1957, Ricky had launched his musical career, and in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s he was one of the highest selling singers, second only to Elvis Presley in popularity.

In 1959 he starred in the movie Rio Bravo with John Wayne and Dean Martin, and in 1963 he married Kristin Harmon. Ricky’s personal tastes in music led him to work with many notable musicians, including James Burton, Joe Maphis and Johnny and Dorsey Burnette.

His music evolved through a number of styles, including rock ‘n’ roll, country and folk, but although in 1963 he signed a 20-year contract with Decca, he had no major hits after 1964’s ‘For You’. Ricky Nelson died in a plane crash in Texas in 1985.
He was survived by his four children, including his twin sons, musicians Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, and actress daughter Tracy Nelson.
